MEDIUM: OIL ON CANVAS
DATE: August 2024
This piece delves into the entrapping emotion of self-pity, drawing inspiration from Ethiopian Orthodox iconographic scrolls, traditionally crafted on parchment or leather. Through this style, I sought to depict the cyclical nature of self-pity.
The boy, with his head bowed in thought, symbolizes deep introspection, while his soul—represented by the eye on the left—struggles to liberate him. The word netsa, meaning "freedom" in Amharic, serves as a poignant reminder that freedom is within his reach if he chooses to recognize it. The faces of Ethiopian angels, depicted within blue diamond shapes across the canvas, further enrich the narrative, embodying the potential for spiritual and emotional liberation.
